Memory questions come down to one decision (how much) and a handful of gotchas. Here are both.

How Much Do You Need?

16 GB

Everyday use and mainstream gaming

The comfortable floor today. Fine for office work, browsing with many tabs, and most games.

32 GB

Enthusiast gaming, streaming, creators

The current sweet spot - room for a modern game plus OBS, Discord, browser, and everything else you actually leave open.

64 GB+

Video editing, VMs, local AI, heavy multitasking

Justified by workloads that genuinely eat memory: 4K timelines, virtual machines, large datasets, running local AI models.

Capacity beats speed

Running out of RAM makes Windows swap to disk - everything stutters. Faster RAM shaves a few percent; more RAM prevents the cliff. If you're choosing between 32 GB of standard-speed and 16 GB of exotic-speed memory, take the capacity.

DDR5 vs. DDR4

Your motherboard and CPU decide this for you - the slots are physically incompatible. Current platforms (AM5, LGA 1851) are DDR5-only; DDR4 lives on in older systems and budget upgrades. Don't buy RAM before you know the platform.

Speed and CAS latency, honestly

MT/s (speed) and CL (latency) trade off against each other - a kit's real-world feel comes from both. AMD Ryzen benefits from the platform's sweet-spot kits (e.g., DDR5-6000 on AM5); beyond the sweet spot you pay real money for benchmark-only gains.

Enable XMP / EXPO - the step everyone misses

RAM runs at a slow fallback speed out of the box. The speed you paid for is a one-time BIOS toggle: XMP on Intel, EXPO on AMD. If you've never turned it on, your 6000 MT/s kit is probably running at 4800.

Two sticks, matching kit

Dual-channel doubles memory bandwidth - always buy pairs (2x16 GB, not 1x32 GB), and buy them as one kit rather than mixing brands and hoping. Four mismatched sticks is the classic source of mystery instability.

Laptops: check before you plan

Many modern laptops solder RAM to the board - what you buy is what you keep. If upgradability matters, confirm SODIMM slots before purchase. This is the #1 'wish I'd known' in laptop buying.
